The Legacy Project
Because Every Family Deserves a Plan.
If someone has given you a Legacy Gift, it means exactly that: it is a gift.
The Legacy Project is a pro bono initiative of the Law Office of Jason Brown & Associates PLLC.
Through the project, a limited number of Legacy Gifts are personally given to members of our community. Each Legacy Gift provides an opportunity to receive basic Texas estate-planning services without an attorney’s fee.
There is nothing to purchase, no obligation to hire our firm for any other service, and no requirement to refer anyone to us.
How It Works
1. Redeem Your Legacy Gift
Each physical Legacy Gift card contains a unique Gift ID, verification code, and redemption deadline. Use the redemption option on this page before the expiration date shown on your card.
2. Initial Review
Our office will contact you and complete our normal conflicts and eligibility review.
3. Estate-Planning Consultation
If there are no conflicts or other circumstances preventing representation, we will meet with you to discuss your estate-planning needs.
4. Your Estate Plan
If your needs fall within The Legacy Project’s scope and our firm accepts the representation, appropriate basic Texas estate-planning documents will be prepared without an attorney’s fee.
Possession of a valid Legacy Gift is required to participate.
Documents That May Be Included
Depending upon your individual circumstances, basic estate planning may include documents such as the following:
- Last Will and Testament
- Statutory Durable Power of Attorney
- Medical Power of Attorney
- Directive to Physicians
- HIPAA Authorization
- Declaration of Guardian
- Appointment for Disposition of Remains
- Other routine ancillary estate-planning documents when appropriate
Every family is different. The documents included in a Legacy Project engagement are determined by the attorney based upon the client’s individual circumstances and needs.
What Is Outside the Project’s Scope
The Legacy Project provides basic estate planning. A Legacy Gift is not an unlimited offer of legal services.
Matters requiring complex or specialized legal planning may fall outside the project. These can include special-needs trusts or benefits-preservation planning, sophisticated blended-family planning, complex trust planning, significant tax planning, business succession planning, extensive asset-protection planning, contested matters, probate, guardianship proceedings, litigation, or other matters the attorney determines cannot appropriately be handled as a basic Legacy Project engagement.
If your circumstances fall outside the project’s scope, the complimentary initial consultation will still be honored. We will explain why the matter requires additional or specialized planning and, when appropriate, help identify possible next steps or resources.
Already Have an Estate Plan?
Legacy Gifts are transferable. If you received a Legacy Gift but already have an estate plan, you may give the card to someone else who could benefit from it.
A Legacy Gift may not be sold, reproduced, or exchanged for money or anything else of value.
Expiration
Each physical card contains its own redemption deadline.
The Legacy Gift must be redeemed by the date shown on the card. The estate plan itself does not have to be completed by that date.
Once a recipient has timely redeemed the card and our firm accepts the representation, the written engagement agreement will govern the representation.
A Legacy Gift provides a complimentary estate-planning consultation and, if the matter is accepted and falls within The Legacy Project’s scope, preparation of basic Texas estate-planning documents at no attorney’s fee. Representation is subject to conflicts review, attorney acceptance, client capacity, program eligibility, and execution of a written engagement agreement. Possession or redemption of a Legacy Gift does not by itself create an attorney-client relationship. Complex estate planning and other matters outside the project’s scope are not included. No purchase is required. No cash value. One redemption per Legacy Gift.
